UN strongly condemns attack on Iranian exiles camp in Iraq

30 October 2015 – The United Nations has strongly condemned the attack that occurred Thursday evening on a camp located near Baghdad International Airport that houses over 2,100 Iranian exiles and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. The attack on Camp Hurriya (Camp Liberty) left at least 26 residents dead and many more wounded, and also reportedly caused casualties among the Iraqi Security Forces in the vicinity of the camp, according to a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Secretary-General. “The Secretary-General calls on the Government of Iraq to promptly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. UNMAI Press Statement on Camp Liberty Attack

Baghdad, 30 October 2015 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) strongly condemns the attack on Camp Hurriya (Camp Liberty) which occurred on the evening of 29 October, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. The camp, in the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport, currently houses over 2100 Iranian exiles. UNAMI urges the Government of Iraq to do its utmost to abide by its commitments in providing adequate security for the residents of the camp and to launch an independent investigation into the killings that would bring the perpetrators to justice. UNHCR statement on today’s attack on vicinity of Baghdad International Airport, including Camp Liberty, in Iraq

29 October 2015 UNHCR strongly condemns today's rocket attacks in the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport, which have also hit adjacent Camp Hurriyet (Camp Liberty), reportedly causing injuries to dozens of people of concern and some 20 deaths. Camp Liberty is home to around 2,200 people of concern to the Office. The authorities have evacuated the injured to Baghdad hospitals. The full extent of the casualties and damage to the camp is still being ascertained. Gathering at UNHCR DC Office Calls for Urgent Action for Release of Iranian Dissident from Unlawful Detention in Iraq

Washington, DC – On Tuesday April 7, 2015 the DC-area Iranian-American families of Iranians residing in Camp Liberty in Iraq held a gathering at the DC Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The protesters condemned Iraq's illegal detention of Mr. Safar Zakeri, a resident of Camp Liberty and called on the UNHCR to take action to secure his immediate release. On March 16, 2015, Mr. Zakeri was detained by the Iraqi authorities after an Iraqi SWAT Forces’ Humvee rammed into the sewage truck he was driving. UN Condemns Attack On Iranian Dissident Group

ASSOCIATED PRESS BAGHDAD (AP) — The United Nations on Friday condemned a rocket attack on a camp housing an Iranian exile group near Baghdad, calling on Iraqi government to protect the camp and investigate the incident. On Thursday night, barrage of rockets were fired on Camp Liberty, home to members of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, the militant wing of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, a Paris-based group opposed to Iran's cleric-led government. The group said three residents were killed and more than 50 wounded. Iraqi officials said the only casualties were two people wounded. UNHCR shocked by another attack affecting Camp Hurriya in Iraq, renews calls for safety and immediate relocation of residents

Press Releases, 27 December 2013 Geneva - The UN refugee agency strongly condemns last night's attack on the Baghdad International Airport Zone, during which a number of rockets landed on Camp Hurriya – reportedly killing three and injuring many more in the camp. At least four camp residents who sustained serious injuries were reportedly rushed to hospitals in Baghdad by the Iraqi authorities. Camp Hurriya has already been hit on multiple occasions.
