IRAN NEWS UPDATE

NEW YORK, NY–(Marketwired – July 16, 2013) –  IranNewsUpdate.com — The international committee In Search of Justice (ISJ) today published a report on the developments in camps Ashraf and Liberty in Iraq. The report released by Dr. Alejo Vidal-Quadras, Vice-President of the European Parliament and President of the ISJ came as the United Nations Security Council session to discuss Iraq begins.

See video of Alejo Vidal-Qudras discussing Camp Liberty and Camp Ashraf here.

The report details five immediate actions the UN Secretary-General and Security Council should take:

  • Return the residents at Camp Liberty to Ashraf and impel the Iraqi government to allow enhanced security measures at Camp Liberty to protect Iranian refugees. Measures include returning T-walls, transferring small bunkers into the camp, installing a two-layer protective cover over the roofs of all the trailers, and provision of protective vests, helmets and medical equipment.
  • Request the presence of a representative on behalf of the Camp Ashraf/Liberty residents to be present at the July 16 United Nations Security Council’s session to deliver a real report and respond to questions from Council members.
  • Request an appointment of a new, truly impartial Special Representative that assumes responsibility over Camp Ashraf and Liberty on behalf of the United Nations.
  • Request the Secretary-General and Security Council establish an impartial fact finding committee to investigate the missile attacks against Camp Liberty.
  • Impel the Iraqi government to revoke existing blockades, including the medical blockades imposed on both Camp Ashraf and Liberty.

The report documents the June 15, 2013 rocket attack on Camp Liberty, the U.S. government and United Nations political and moral responsibility, the likelihood of future attacks on Camp Liberty and testimony of Mr. Tahar Boumedra, a former United Nations Human Rights Section Chief in Iraq and long-time advisor on Ashraf Mr. Boumedra resigned in protest to Martin Kobler’s biased policies and actions in May 2012.

Martin Kobler, who currently serves as United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq is expected to speak before the Security Council at today’s meeting. Iranian-Americans will hold a protest outside of the United Nations building condemning Kobler’s misconduct. Former Congressman Patrick Kennedy, Nontombi Naomi Tutu, and Tahar Boumedra are among dignitaries taking part in New York rally.
